Is your learner ready to continue your ASL journey? In this class your learner will add to their ASL vocabulary by learning signs for animals, food, clothing, and locations. We will also dig deeper into the ASL culture and norms in preparation for conversing in ASL. We'll touch on a bit of ASL word order and grammar while noting the ways in which ASL differs from English. We will also continue our emphasis of fingerspelling receptive skills in which students improve their ability to read fingerspelling at a fast rate. Finally, we'll study the Deaf President Now movement and learn about several cultural norms in the Deaf community and how they are similar and different from our own. At the end of each class (and sometimes during the beginning), students will partake in an engaging activity or game to help reinforce learned vocabulary and important historical facts. While many of the games are competition-based, students should always strive to beat their own personal best. Please note that while it is recommended that students take the prerequisite to this class (These Hands Can Talk: Part 1), students who have some prior experience with ASL may find this part two class appropriate. Students who are not familiar with the manual alphabet (the ABC's) are advised to take part one before enrolling in this class.
