Welcome to Lights, Camera, Fiction: Science vs. the Movies! In this interactive 5-week discussion class, students will explore the real science behind some of the most famous movie moments of all time. From giant sharks and dinosaur DNA to tornadoes, spider powers, and time travel, students will investigate whether Hollywood science could actually happen in real life. Each class begins with a short, age-appropriate overview of the featured movie and its major scientific idea, so students do not need to have watched the movie beforehand. Together, we’ll explore the real-world science connected to the film through engaging explanations, fun facts, guided discussion, and critical thinking questions. Students will have the opportunity to share opinions, debate ideas, and decide whether the movie’s science is realistic, exaggerated, or completely impossible. This class encourages curiosity, respectful discussion, and evidence-based thinking in a fun and engaging environment designed especially for tweens and young teens who love movies, science, and asking big questions.
